Subject:  Sweet Victory! We have won the friendship cup and will keep it FOREVER
All SYGC members,

First of all, my salute to Lucas. He is a great and
dedicated captain. His leadership gave us the victory.
Let us give him a standing ovation! Great job!

The result is a lot closer than I thought. We won it
by a final score of 12.5 to 11.5. My prediction was we
will triumph by a score of 14 to 10. I have also
not-so-secretly hoped Wen and I will bring in the
deciding point to close the game. But I have never
thought our ladies would have lost and I still could
not believe I palyed so badly myself. But like it was
destiny, my cart's battery went dead and we had to
finish last. And my team (actually Wen did it single
handly) did bring in the deciding point to win the
cup! That is how exciting the game had been this year.

I am very lucky to play with Wen this year. In my
opinion, he is the best partner one can ask for. He
played so well under pressure and delivered many
clutch shots along the way when his partner choked
many times.

Our opponents are both good friends of mine. Both true
gentleman and great to play with. Cavin is the biggest
traitor since he is a CTU alumni and should really be
a member of our club. Someday, I will make him do what
he promised last year and play for SYGC. But after
Danny and Conrad, if I do that, I think MVGC would
probably kill me. Dr. Liu is a great surgeon, if you
know that, you would not be surprised by the precision
of his short game.

All four of us celebrated every birdie and every good
shots together. We would even apologize for lucky ball
bounces that got back on fairway or the green. Our
foursome had shown true sportsmanship and friendship
while keeping the game very interesting. Too bad I did
not play well to keep the match more competitive but
it was very enjoyable all the way. And I only wish
every player could have enjoyed the game as much as I
did.

Following the tradition, I would like to ask every
player to write a few words to share with all members.
We won this year because the rookies played so well
and we want more participation from everyone to form
the best team every year. I truly hope every member
will get a chance to play this team match against
another club in the future. Trust me, it is so much
fun to play for team!

Here is my salute to Lucas and the team. Because of
Lucas's earnest enthusiasm and dedication, we have a
great team chemistry this year.

Come to my game today, I started great and ended
strong ( birdy first, par the last ), that's about the
high light for me. My great partner Cangsang was
holding the fort all day long. When Martin & Willy
got hot and were killing us on front 9, Cangsang was
never in rush; then when our opponents and I are being
penalized here and there on the back 9, Cangsang just
went on carving his 84. I'm really glad that we came
back to even the match when we were 2 down after 16
hole.

All in all, I had great fun today and am looking
forward to the event next year.

Conrad :-)

P.S. I still got called "traitor" by you know who.

Congratulations to all. A few words to this event.

We would have lost the Cup if we are not lucky this year. Looking at
the score, each match on the MVGC won is very decisive in the early
game while SYGC needed to fight almost to the last hole. This can only
happen if you lost your confidence and patience in the early game, you
started to lose your swing tempo and you frustrated with your short
games. But lucky you.

I have taught a few people in MVGC of their short games and swing. I
would not surprise that Cavin won over Yu Chang even Yu is in good
condition that would be still a close match. If Yu have noticed Cavin
has improved his short games tremendously, I am not talking about
putting, it would be tough for me to beat him as well. Admittedly, I
have fixed Cavin's swing tempo and taught him the short games,
chipping, pitching and bunker shorts since 2003. So, Yu, you better
get Cavin over to SYGC, he will be a single handicapper in no time.
Next year, it would not be easy and even the following years. Go
improving your short games. Not just putting alone. My definition of
the short games does not include putting. If you can put your ball in
3 feet range within 100 yeards, your putting will improve. There is
one big difference between you and I is that I am not afraid to shoot
into the bunker. But I try to avoid it.

A lot of people thinks that they have a pretty good short game already.
They can put the ball the green if the ball lies within 100 yeards.
Once there was a member from MVGC that I also taught him swing and
short games, he told me his short game is pretty good shape since he
can put the ball on green from bunker, rough, etc. I asked him just
one question, "how close to the pin?". And he pondered. If you can
put the ball within 3 feet every time, I would like to learn from you
and paid you.

Roger and I are lucky enough that we beat both of Daniel and Peter. It
was a much friendlier game than most of you. Both teams have exchanged
tips and advises through the whole play. But we were still tried to
put our pressure onto our opponents in every occasion. Thank God that
Daniel did not have any games yesterday. Roger had trouble on chipping
and luckily did not made too much damage. If Daniel had played more
conservative and not made too many mistakes, Roger would be in trouble
and I would be in trouble as well. Peter was 1 up after the front 9.
And he collapsed in the back 9. I have luckily collected the rest of
it. Accidentally I played a better back 9 than front 9. On the
putting green, both Peter and I have put ourselves in a 3 to 4 feet
putt a lot of times and we have made most of it. If not, this would be
a reverse.

Good enough, I am not trying to discourage you. But want to see the
best of you. I hope this is not the last Cup we won but the beginning.

It was my first year playing in SYGC and F-Cup, and it
was such a great experience. To be honest, I did not
take this very seriously until recently I noticed how
everybody was preparing for the event. I took one day
off and went to play two rounds last Tuesday, which
really helped me to know the course better.

In yesterday's matches, I started to be a little bit
nervous, kind of having a tendency not to finish up my
swing. I three-putted the second hole to lose the hole
in the best ball match. Martin was really hot,
consistently hitting mostly fairways and greens. After
13 holes, we were 4 down with 5 to go. They have been
covering for each other very well for the first 13
holes. We could very well have given it up after 13
holes. The bad news is that we had a mountain to climb
and the good news (sort of) is that there are plenty
of troubles around the 5 holes left that may allow us
to catch up. Luckily, we were patient enough to hold
on our own and unluckily for them, they started to
make mistakes together. In the last hole, my partner
Conrad's accurate 8-footer par putt had saved me from
worrying about putting the ball into the hole to win
the last hole.

All and all, four of us all had a great time playing
the game.

Thanks for many of you, especially our captain Lucas,
who have dedicated to organizing this event.

Yu;

Thanks a lot, it was my pleasures to have chance to be a participant in this event, when our club wins, we all win.  I really enjoy the time, without your supports, I don't think I can hold myself up against the pressures.

My words for this tournament is as follow;

Great camaradery, fun, partner, team and captain.

Hi,

Well, it was a tougher competition than I would have
thought, but we did win back the trophy(I've never
been as optimistic as Lucas and Yu). I believe
everyone of us gave out 110% of what we have. Some won
with not so good game(like me) but some lost with a
even better performance by the opponents. We should
applaud for all of us... as Lucas pointed out, I've
met some over-practiced players in the driving range,
Brian, Wen, Tony and Cangsang..

I was teaming up with Lucas, it was good and bad, the
bad is I think I can not let(or drag) him down since
he's such a dedicated captain, good thing is he's so
experienced, helped me a lot to be confident and more
calmed, even telling stories to keep the tensions
away. From the beginning, both of our opponents put
pressure on us, never missed a fairway with consistent
220 yards drive, I don't think it's common among the
players with my handicap.

Lucas is playing within himself with a killer look, he
controlled the tempo well(neven change swing a bit)
and took advantage of any mistakes the opponent made,
the opponent's iron shots finally broke down. Lucas
started to lead the match in the front nine and never
loooked back. Although Lucas was not at his best form
yesterday, he was mentally unbeatable, never gave up
in any circumstances. One hole he had a errant tee
shot but salveged the hole with a perfect 4 iron. His
opponents finally lost gas and broke down.

On my side, made to the fairway bunker in the first 3
holes, but I was doing OK with my irons to save some
pars. Overall exchanged with missing couple 1,2-foot
range putts for the price as a rookie. Finally at 7th
hole, with my higher handicap, I got one shot
advantage, which I did shoot a par that our opponents
feel they can not make birdies there. I started to
lead. Finally at 17th tee box, Lucas informed me I
made my job done, I double checked with him and became
myself again and finished with a birdie and par.

I felt like playing two rounds of golf yesterday, not
only playing mine, also playing my opponent's. Hope we
all play better and better, as Danny pointed out,
there's quite some we need to improve on. For now,
let's all celebrate for this uneasy win, salute for
the team, the captain, president and our club!!

Happy golfing,
Eric Ouyang

Subject:  RE: Victory! We Won back Friendship Cup
Dear all:

First of all, I have so much fun playing with my partner Ivan, playing with
our team, and playing the F-Cup. I had my best score ever (only one round of
83 in San Jose Muni before). I was so focused in the F-cup play that I don't
feel like to go back to golf course again for weeks after this. :)

I attribute our total victory against our two competitors to the great
partnership between Ivan and me and good preparation. Ivan and I missed the
opportunity to practice together in the first practice round. He then
invited me to play with him in his club the last Sat. That helped so much
for us to know each other and each other's game. The three practice rounds
took me to my peak performance in the F-cup. I shot 105, 99, and 95 in the
three practice rounds.

Not practicing last Thursday and Friday gave my body the right tempo.

4 of us started the first hole with okay tee shots. All three on. But Ivan
and I managed 1 chip and 1 putt. Starting to show Francis and Ping our short
game strength. On the first 3 holes, I did the same, 1 chip 1 putt. Ivan is
similar. We won all first three holes. Francis and Ping started to admit
that Ivan and I had good short game skills. That gave them big pressure.
Ivan kept giving them gimmees. He even gave Francis a gimmee for me even
before I putt. If I had three putted, I would have lost that hole. The magic
is that gave them more pressure. :)

Toward the end of front 9, Francis got his long tee-shots and good
approaching shots back. And Ping was laying his balls in fairway almost
100%. Francis got 2 birdies, and Ping got 1. However, we only lost to those
birdies by bogeys. That kind of disappointed them, and took the pressure
away from us. :)

In the two holes they gave us 1 stroke, Ivan and I just aimed for bogeys.
That annoyed them. They had to be aggressive to try to be 2 on. In hole 13,
they both lost their balls to the long rough and creek. We won those two
holes with bogeys. Ivan and I have smiles in our faces.

Ivan's back hurt. He kept using his 5 woods using punching shot. He shot
three pretty over 160 up 5 woods from rough and slope stands in hole 5, 13
and 15.

In hole 14, when our scores are close for both singles and team, Francis
made a bogey. I was try to be aggressive to make a long putt with huge
breaks and missed it with a 4 foot putt with again huge breaks. I made it,
tied for the team and myself. That upset Francis so much in his heart. :)
But this is just a start.

Hole 15 and 16 were so crucial. If they won these two holes, the results of
the games could be totally different. Francis got on green with a good
birdie chance. I landed between the cart path and the stares in a very small
flat area. I have to stand on the car path to play, and there is no place to
drop the ball. That was a 25 foot downhill chip, had to land the ball in the
first cut with slopes. I walked around the green twice. Standing on the car
path, swang with extreme confidence. The ball just landed in the edge of
the green and rolled to 1 foot from the hole! Francis was so upset. He did
not make the birdie put, and even let me putt that. We tied this hole again.

Coming to 16th hole. Ivan and I teed off first. I rolled out to the first
cut, about 6 feet from the green. Even worse, Ivan went into the deep
bunker. Then, Francis hit too long into the rough. But Ping was on green not
far from the hole. They would think they would have this hole. But Ivan and
I would not let them. Ivan first chipped out from the banker 3-4 feet from
the hole. I did not chip well, passed the hole about 4 feet. Guess what, we
both pared that hole while Ping did too.

By then, they lost their singles against us. They could win the team game if
they took the last two holes. But they totally lost their confidence. :)

I had a double in the 17th hole. But my proud partner Ivan got a firm bogey
to ensure our final victory in the team play.

Ivan and I are so hot. We both pared the last hole. Ivan shot 91.

Some interesting episodes. Francis was questioning my index. I told him that
I only shot 105, 99, and 95 in practice rounds in last two weeks.

I was so focused in the game that I read green so well. Ivan was asking me
"hi little brother, come to help me read the line." :) I read correct, and
he executed perfect. I don't have any 3 putts, total only 28 putts.

In hole 15th, Ivan got into the creek near the green while Ping was not far
from green after 2nd shot. I warned Ivan that he still had chance. Francis
said to me "you are very optimistic." He meant that I was too optimistic. It
turned out that Ivan choked his first attempt. But Ping missed his first
chip, and at least two putted. Ivan would have chance to win or tied if he
succeeded the first save chip or just took a one stroke penalty. If Ivan
took a penalty stroke on this whole and one in the front 9, he could have
saved 2 strokes to make 89.

Don't get me wrong. Francis and Ping had pleasant time playing with Ivan and
me apart from losing the games to us. Ivan and I enjoyed too. We made two
friends.

Ivan and I have the perfect chemistry. :) We often stood by each other when
the other was make a shot. That took us to the victory.

By the way, another two persons played positive roles in my game. I played
with my long-time friend Chuan in last Wed's practice round. Last year I
played with him in this course and shot 108. The 2nd day in our monthly
game, I shot 91. 17 stroke's improvement. This time, 10 strokes. Randy, I
will lend him to you next year. :)

Last, love from my girl friend, Daisy, made me calm and focused. (I am going
to copy her this email. :))

Thank you, Captain, thank you, Yu, and thank you all my fellow SYGC members.
I enjoy being with you!

Best,
Long
PS: I flew out of town mid night after the F-cup. :)

Subject:  RE: [SYGC] Sweet Victory! We have won the friendship cup and will keep it FOREVER
Hi All

Speaking strictly about my foursome, the game was intense,
polite, and eventually friendly. Both teams were quite generous when
impacts were none. Our competitors Tony Chen and Sherry Rauen were good
sports and made the event enjoyable. Regrettably not all teams were
facing similarly pleasant opponents.

One lesson I learned is to be aware of your opponents scores but
don't try to force shots too much. In the front nine, I was trying to
compete against "Hot Sherry" as well and took additional risks on
approach shots not only without much successes, I gave up at least one
hole in personal match because of the additional risks. After I started
ignoring her scores and left George to face the feline alone, I was able
to turn on the pressure.

Competitor observation -
Drive -
Tony Chen worked pretty hard for the drive to achieve reasonable
distance. He may have tired himself out at back nine and started
fighting his own swing.
Sherry Rauen has a very stable swing. She was able to work with a minor
swing flaw to produce clean and good result. Since the lady's tee -box
were often 80 to 100 yards closer to the hole comparing to the while
tee, it was difficult to put much pressure on her to observe her driving
under pressure. Only when winds picked up and the course was playing
difficult, she made two errant drives.

Approach -
Tony Chen. Solid mid iron. Great short iron. Fairway woods and long
irons are not as stable. Needs to work on side hill + rough fairway
woods or long irons.
Sherry Rauen was not a long hitter but played fairway wood very well.
She was able to approach with fairway woods and kept the ball on the
green.

Short Game/Putting
Tony Chen was deadly around greens even in back nine. Almost chip in
once across a big green. Very solid putting. Great distance control.
Rarely scramble for the second put.
Sherry Rauen - Hot. Hot. Hot. With a course score rated at 88, Sherry
was on fire and shot a gross 39 for the front nine. George was a true
sport to tackle an almost impossible opponent.

Course management
Tony Chen - Willing to set up and to make up the strokes with short
games.
Sherry Rauen - Good drives to set up good approach angles. The course
was really not long enough to challenge her course management skills.

Many thanks to the dedications by the whole team, the tips by
Yu, the team meeting sponsored by Ivy, and the tireless leadership by
Captain Lucas. The team meeting on the course management and wind
direction after the practice round were extremely helpful. The course
management Conrad had pointed out for me during the practice round sure
paid dividend for my part of competition.

Cheers,

Tony

Need to add some for Tony Su, we were under tremendous pressure from Sherry
and Tony Chen at front nine, Sherry hit consective pars for the first three
holes and finished front nine at 3 over, Tony Chen was also hot at
beginning but Tony Su was able to overcome the pressure and showed his
strength at back nine. Tony Su and I didn't have chance play together
before F-Cup but the best for him is the confidence in his play and not be
influenced by my bad shots or Sherry's good shots, that made him won the
important point against Tony Chen.

Four of us enjoyed the the game and cheered everyone's good shot. It was
great game and I am thankful to have this opportunity again. Thanks to
Lucas and everyone participated yesterday. I did have great time and wish
to be there next time.

Thanks
George

Subject: RE: F-Cup Team Daily Update - 5/16 (Last one)

Congratulations to the Club, Captain and everyone who participated in
the event.

Again, the surprise is there that the result is so close. My unspoken
assumption last year was the result would be done before our foursome
finished 18th. Peter repeated the same assumption when we were at the
1st tee this year. Four of us played like a weekend outing between
friends. There was no signs of competition other than the consultations between
partners from time to time. The friendly atmosphere at least killed my
deepest fear on the F-cup event - the long waits between shots would
have disturbed an impatient person like me. Maybe my patience improved over
the past year. Thanks to Danny. He is a good partner and reads green
exactly how it breaks. Thank to Daniel who collapsed early after I alleviated
my hooking. I was in the cruise mode after leading 3 in the front 9. My
personal would have done at 14th if not for my over-clubbing on the approach.
81 after 3 double bogeys is pretty I can do these days. I will shoot
another 70-something in our annual event if there is another driver to
claim.

Overall, things have improved over the past 3 years as the two clubs
learned to plan and organize the event. I believe that both preparing and
playing the event have left positive effects on all the players. I would think
most of the players would continue to support the event. The negative
incident has been there for all the 3 years we have played. Let's put it as the
#1 issue to revolve before next year's. Thanks to Jennifer and Ivy for
taking the heat. It is a personality issue, not golf or competition related.
SYGC will insist only genuine golfers be qualified and accepted for play in
any future F-Cup event.

Cheers,
Roger
