Las Positas

Sunday, March 26, 2000, we had a wonderful day for our first Y2K tournament at Las Positas, Livermore. And this was also the first game after we adopted new membership rules and NCGA index. Roger Su, the unbeatable man, led the score 81, 4 strokes ahead the second player James Yang, and 8 strokes ahead the third player Jerry Chang. This is the 4th games he has won for the year.

What surprised more and made all the male players so shamed, Jennifer Kao (the first lady in flight 1 of CTUAA GC history) took the Net 1 prize of flight 1. She shot 90 at net 69.

Though most of the players lost balls in the hazard or water, here is a funny one. The Water Boy, Albert Pan, shot consecutive 6 balls into the water at the same hole, same spot at hole 6, 326 yards. It's witnessed by Ivan Ho who observed the whole show with no mercy to let the water boy carry the ball through the hazard by hands.

Spring Valley

We had a beautiful Sunday and happy golf tournament at Spring Valley golf course. Several members have made significant progress since last year. We see Michael Chang, Lucas Tsai shot under 100 more often than before. Liz Chen is also getting close to 100. Jennifer Kao, Yu Chang, Ivan Ho are trying to get stable in the low 90's. So, what is your goal? Hope we will see more and more people shot in 80's by end of this season. For flight 2 members, hope to see them breaking 100 and staying in 90's.

Chardonay

May 21 was definitely a very special experience for us. It seemed that the temperature was setting a barrier -100F, for a lot of us, only 6 of us were able to beat this number. On top of this, huge number of pollen counts also contributed to the difficulty level.

Well, it's a hard job, but somebody got to do it!

Anyway, the tournament  also marked the beginning of a new era: Steve Hsia, our rising star, who edged out roger of 88, hit 87 to claim the gross crown. And, for the first time in our club history, a lady claimed the longest drive award in the Lady/Man together format. Carol Chen hit about 180 yards to clinch this title (from red tee of course:)

Here are the detailed results:

Gross #1 - Steve Hsia G87
Net #1 - Michael Chang G96 N69

Oakhurst

First of all, we would like to welcome our new members, YuHai Hsiao and Conrad Chen, played with us in this tournament. This time we had all par 3 holes competing for near pin. Hope you have enjoyed the more winning chance than before.

Michael Change continued improving and took the low gross 1st place at 94. Roger Su actually had the lowest score at 88, however, with his previous winning history, less then 81 is his target. Conrad Chen is improving lately and shot 98 to take the net 1st place in Fight 2. Benny Peng is working hard to come to close 100. He shot 104 and claimed the net 2nd place in Flight 2.

Hope by end of this season, we have most of our club members shot at 100 and better, so our tournament playing pace will be fast enough for not getting complains from "Marshal".

Once again, playing the "ready golf" is a good courtesy to our friends. If you need help on how to play "ready golf", we will be more than happy to play with you and provide suggestions on course.

Summit Pointe

It's a great day for all CTU alumni. 2000 Reunion has brought lots of old friends together. On Sunday, totally 28 golfers, including 8 honorable guests, joined us for a beautiful Sunday afternoon.

- First of all, let's welcome Max Wu of Acer America to join our club. Max is a CTU alumni (1978 EE) and a vivid golfer. His single-handed golf swing proved to be better than lots of traditional golf swings. We expect to play more often with Max in our upcoming tournaments.

- After Clarent (NASD: CLRN) was upgraded last week by Lehman's Brothers, it gave its CEO a strong boost of self-esteem such that Jerry Chang shot 83, 8 shots ahead of the second contender, to claim the gross #1 title, even without his caddie, Tiger Woods.

- Did you notice that 3COM recently changed its logo? It was believed the new logo came with ritual blessing from some South American Voodoo tribe, and it will bring good luck to its employees. Hey! it was true! Gary Wang was so lucky to shot 92 and was able to claim the NET#1 trophy with score of 66.8 (using New Peoria).

- The most amazing development in this tournament is, Shirley Chang, after several sessions with Butch Harmon, improved her swing on both accuracy and distance tremendously. She took home two trophies: long drive (Man/Lady format) and near pin. She out-drive man's long-drive champion, her husband Yu Chang, by an estimated 50 yards.

Gross #1 Jerry Chang 83
Net #1 Gary Wang 92 (66.8)
Net #2 Jimmy Jen 99 (72.6)
Net #3 Frank Hsu 98 (74.8)

Long Drive/ W Shirley Chang
Near Pin #3 Jerry Chang
Near Pin #5 Shirley Chang
Near Pin #13 Liz's Uncle
Near Pin #16 Benny Peng

- Special acknowledgements go to Randy Tan, who cannot attend this tournament since he is the chairman of the whole reunion. Randy donated two prizes for this tournament. Also thanks to Roger Su, President of the golf club, who donated 5 lucky prizes as well. (Gee, we should have more of this kind of donation for our regular tournaments:)

Poppy Ridge

It's fantastic that we enjoyed much from the Poppy Ridge golf course. We were lucky to get the tee time in the early morning. Most of the golf courses only allow the tournament starting late after.

Congratulation on Ivan Ho. He took the first prize of Gross, 90. It's a head-to-head competition between him and Jerry Chang. Both of them shot on 90. So we compared the last 9 holes. Still tied. Then we compared the last 6 holes. Walla.

YuHuai Hsiao, a black horse (new member and just got index), took the flight II first prize (96/66). Yu Chang was totally stunned. Yu gave a lot of tips and mentoring in the first few holes to YuHuai. But YuHuai just continued to have straight driver shots, incredible chip-in, and couple of one-put on green. Then Yu Chang swore if he gave any help to YuHuai, he is a pig. Well, Yu did again, so he ...

And you can find it from the result list below, Lucas Tsai shows up 3 times. Finally, a father can proudly bring back a trophy to his son who kept asking "How come? Dad, you come home with empty hands. How come?". You know how it hurt in a 5 year-old kid's heart. Congratulation.

Here is the result.

Chinese Olympics

Dear CTUAA Golfers,

This is to inform you of the good news we achieved on Chinese
Olympics Golf tournament:

- CTUAA team won 2nd place for gross team competition: Thanks
to Roger Su, Steve Hsia, Norman Lin and Yu Chang.

- Jennifer won 1st place lady's net champion.

- Steve won 2nd place net competition (he broke 80, and shot 79).

- Roger won 3rd place net competition (he also shot 79).

- Jessie Yang, our young hot shot, stormed some 300 yards, and
won Man's long drive champion.

- Eric Yang's wife, Chunling Liu, won lady's long drive.

This is the first year we participated in Chinese Olympics as an alumni
association golf club, and the achievement was really exceptional.

Congratulations to all of us!!!

Best Regards,
CTUAAGC Staff (Albert, Liz, Lucas, and Steve)

Santa Clara

It's end of summer, kids are preparing to go back to schools, and people are all coming back from vacation. Before silicon valley goes into another traffic hell, 24 of our CTUAAGC golfers were determined to enjoy the last drop of summer fun, and we did:

- Monk from far away can really chant. Young Lin, vice Chairman of ITEX, shot the lowest score 77, and claimed guest gross award. Richard Jiang, our CTU alumni from Taiwan, claimed lowest putt award with only 31 putts.

- Yu Chang, and Ivan Ho, both shot 79, and Yu claimed low gross, while Ivan claimed Lowest Net 1 from flight #1. Old gingers are indeed spicier. Did you believe Yu still lost $17 on the course for skin games?

- What do Frank Hsu, Conrad Chen, and Liz Chen have in common? No, not because they are all human beings, nor because they are all ethic Chinese. They all shot their lowest score ever today! Frank shot 83, and claimed Net #2 in flight 1; Conrad shot 84, and claim Net#1 flight 2. Miss Liz broke 100, shot 99 to claim Net#3, flight 3. Congratulations!!!

- After 2 weeks vacation in Taiwan, and couple of days gambling at Reno, Roger obviously lost all his feel, and shot poorly. However, the power is still there for the old horse to claim, for the first time, man's long drive. On the other hand, Shirley seemed invincible on lady's long drive competition again!

Also, 1 week in Hawaii never slowed down Jennifer: she claimed 2 nearest pin award today.

Poppy Hill

Thanks for CTUAA GC members who made the 2000 annual tournament a fun event. No matter the scores are good or bad, everybody is the winner. As CTUAA GC president, Roger Su, mentioned, we had our first annual dinner banquet this year, we would have more and more interesting events to make CTUAA GC fun to play with.

The first flight players are incredibly competitive, one player has net 67, three players have net 71, and four players have net 73. As Randy Tan said, CTUAA GC is getting recognized and attention in Bay Area!!!

Before announcing the score, I like to pay tribute to a player, who won respect not only by playing excellent, but also by being the first and the only lady in the first flight. Jennifer Kao, the best CTUAA GC lady player.

Roger won the real champion two years in a row, shall we take the trophy away from him next year?

Santa Teresa

"If you believe it, it will not rain.", this is what happen to the last weekend's CTUAA golf tournament. The weather was so unstable that I had received so many phone calls asking about the game. But, we did it and it was just about right for us to enjoy the game. This is the first time to try 4-ball scramble game and hope everyone will find it is completely different to play individually. Team work and strategy is most important.

San Juan Oaks

Though it's the last game of the year, it is still an exciting one.

With consistent and some magic ways to put the balls on fairway all the time, Jennifer Tan took the 1st Gross prize at the lowest score of 89. It's also the first time that a lady can get the gross prize.

It's the first time that Liz Chen broke 100, shooting at 97 (with net 66). With the money she collected from Jimmy Jen, YuHuai Hsia and Conrad Chen, she bought us plenty of beer and hot wings. Thanks to those 3 gentlemen.

We were also glad to have 2 senior Alumni Raymond and Florence Hou to join the game. Hope they will be back more next year.
