Castlewood Best Ball Competition Results -3/24/2002
Mon, 25 Mar 2002 13:33:49 -0800

Dear CTUAAGC Golfers,

They said where there is a will, there is a way. They also said, if you wish
for something really hard, it will come true. This Sunday is a proof. When
there were 24 people wishing very hard for good weather, it sure happened.
And we got to play a very nice round of golf again at Castlewood.

Still many thanks to our supporting members, i.e., Ling Lee & Alex Hsu, Jennifer
& Randy Tan, Ivy & Ivan Ho, Steve Wang, Mitch Duh, and Don Hsieh.
We should do this more often ;-)

OK, best ball team results:

First place: 68 George Cheng and Frank Hsu (both honorary F-Cup members)
Second place: 69 Ivan and Ivy Ho (Well, the chemistry is right, what can we say?)
Third place: 69 Michael Wang and Joe Chou (They compensated for each other's lousy holes...)

Each member got a sleeve of Titliest Pro-V1 balls. If you have not got it, remember to get
it from me next time. Also, don't forget the most precious award - CTUAAGC pins...

Well, see you next time, and let's hope we do our best at Black Horse against Lastavista, oops,
Monta Vista.

Regards....................Lucas

Black Horse F-Cup Best Ball Competition Results -4/13/2002
Sun, 14 Apr 2002 09:50:13 -0700

Dear CTUAA GC Members,

The climate was perfect for golfing yesterday.
Sunny blue sky. Warm enough for you wear your tee shirt.
Almost windless but a little breeze to keep you cool and
make you think about your approach shots.

Our well-prepared team won the match with an eye-whopping 5-2.
Exactly what the Captain (i.e. yours truly) predicted
before the game started. And we did this without our
best player Norman whose wife started contraction
the night before the game. I think the baby wanted to come
to this world early and share our joy.

This game was so exciting, everyone in both clubs stayed in
the party for a long time. The dinner was great! A lot of beer
were consumed. Frank and George had 4 each on the course and
I do not know how much more they had in the party.

MVGC president complained (for fun) we put players with
good chemistry in a team, complained about us wearing team
shirts and Caps. And they want a re-match already.
We will probably play a similar game in October (no trophy).

I want to thank the players for their dedication and effort.
We put a lot of heart in this and it was great fun for all!

We out-played them.
Only one of our player shoot a net score over 80.
They have 5 players shoot more than 80.
And they lost these 5 matches.
Although their lower index players all played decently,
their higher index players helped less compared to ours.

We out-prepared them.
12 of the 14 players played a practice round at
Black horse within 10 days before the game.
Everyone practiced hard and played hard.
Almost all teams actually practiced/played together.

We out-strategied them.
As a club, we have great loyalty from the players and
almost everyone knows other members/players.
Our team pairing selection is based on team chemistry.
5 of the teams are made up with close friends who
played together frequently. This genuine partnership
has proven to be a big help when the pressure is high.

And the last minute replacement players whom the Captain
had the privilege to recruit all played greatly.
Alex helped Jennifer beating a fine team.
JI helped Liz to play relaxed and he won many holes too.
Albert played really well, matching his index but lost
since his partner did not recover until the last 3 holes.

Lucern started hot early winning 1 and tied 2 in the first 4.
Then Lucas become very hot in the back 9, he shot 89 and
this is only the second time he broke 90.
What a good timing for such a great performance. Both played well,
the combined net score is the best among all 7 teams too.

But most impressive of all is how they helped each other.
Just look at their front 9 and back 9 scores, you will see
how good a match up this team is.

Lucas 47/40
Lucern 51/56

George/Frank, Alex/Michael, Jennifer/Alex all played like this too.
One player has a great front 9, while the other has a great back 9.

Our individual players may not be much better, but our teams
are performing at a much better level.

And now it can be told. I had tweaked our lineup twice
so that the team ranking would result in the matches
I believe that would advantageous to our side.
Alex/Michael did not disappoint us, beating their best team,
who got intimated by Steve's long/straight drives.
It takes their best 2 performers (net 67 and 70) to beat
Roger/Jerry in a very close match. Roger/Jerry did not play
poorly, but their opponents just had not 1 but 2 super games.
And a very poised team of Jennifer/Alex cracked their
opponents exactly how I hoped. I played behind them and
was feeling better when Takashi (sometimes Conrad too!)
kept on looking for ball in the trees.

We out-motivated them.
I heard a comment from MVGC player after the game: "We just
want to play for fun, unlike CTUAA who cared about this more."
I may beg to differ that they "just want to have fun".
But I agreed totally that we wanted about this more, much more.
And that is why we out-worked them and deserved to win.

So at the end, no surprise, WE WON!

Lake Chabot Tournament Results - 6/16/02
Mon, 17 Jun 2002 18:17:16 -0700

Dear CTUAAGC golfers,

For those who cannot make it yesterday, you don't know what
you have missed. Lake Chabot is actually a very fun course to play.
The layout is hilly, and some of the holes you won't see the green.
We played 5 par-3 holes, and only gave out 3 near-pin awards.
Some of the greens are actually dome-shaped turtleback green,
just like the one in Masters championship couple of years ago.
Some of the holes on top of the hill give you easy access to the view
of San Francisco bay and city views of Oakland and SF. The weather
is fantastic, particularly with sea breeze and sunny skies. The 18th hole
did live up to our expectation as the most unusual par-6 hole, with a
strenuous up and down hilly fairway, and a up the hill green at the end.

For the competition, this is the first tournament of the year that we gave
out trophies, and Randy/ Jennifer, the dynamic couple, took home two
major trophies, with Randy lowest net award (-8, as he broke 90), and
Jennifer lowest gross (82, beat everybody with her laser beam-precise
short game). Joe Lin, our rising star in the club, who paired with Randy,
shot an impressive 91 (net -6) to clinch lowest net #2 in the Golden tier.
Lucern continued to charge forward with her impeccable swing to shot 93
(-2) for the bronze award. On the contrary, in the Diamond tier, except
for Jennifer's performance, what happened wasn't nearly as exciting:
Conrad Chen, George Cheng, and Eric Chou won net competition with
net scores of -1, -1, +3. The gap between Diamond and Gold tier
obviously is narrowing, and some of our members have tremendously
improved their game in the past couple of months.

Here is the summary:

Low Gross - Jennifer Kao, 82 (-3)

Diamond Tier
Low Net #1 - Conrad Chen, 87 (-1)
Low Net #2 - George Cheng, 89 (-1)
Low Net #3 - Eric Chou, 91 (+3)

Gold Tier
Low Net #1 - Randy Tan, 89 (-8)
Low Net #2 - Joe Lin, 91 (-6)
Low Net #3 - Lucern Ma, 93 (-2)

Guest Lowest Gross - Scott Chiou, 86

Men's Long Drive - Eric Chou
Lady's Long Drive - Jennifer Kao
Near Pins - Conrad Chen, Rose Cheng, Scott Chiou

See you next month, July 21, at Poppy Ridge. It has been
a very popular course in the club's history, and I will encourage
you to sign up ASAP. Michael Chang will be July host, and he
will send out a separate notice later.

Chinese Olympics Tournament Results (Summit Pointe) - 7/13/02
Date: Wed, 17 Jul 2002 22:18:02 -0700

Dear CTUAAGC Golfers,

As you might be aware that our team participated in last weekend's
Bay Area Chinese Olympics golf tournament. I would like to thank
those who joined the game on behalf of CTUAAGC:

Shirley Chang
Jennifer Kao
Chunlin Liu
Yu Chang
Frank Hsu
Norman Lin
Lucas Tsai
Gary Wang
Michael Wang
Eric Yang

Special thanks to Alex Hsu for coming to the course handing out gatorade, even
though he could not participate in the game.

Now, for individual competitions:

- Jennifer the invincible, won Lady's Net Championship.
- Frank won Senior's Long Drive Champion.
- Lucas won Men's Long Drive Championship.

As for team competition, an average score of 88.75 (87, 87, 89, 92 by Jennifer,
Yu, Norman, and Lucas) did not get us through top 3 (#1 NCKU alumni, #2
Golden Pro, and #3 Evergreen). I asked Golden Pro and Oscar told me their
average is ~85, 86, so we are actually very close. I hope next year we could
summon the best players to join the team competition again (In 2000 we won
team #2 just next to NCKU alumni).

Regards,

CTUAA GC 2002 Annual Tournament, Cinnabar Hills 09/22/02
Date: Tue, 24 Sep 2002 20:00:34

Dear All,

It's a great tournament, an exciting course with interesting tee boxes. 8
players broke 90.

Congratulation to Jennifer. She is the first lady to win our Annual Tour
gross prize. She shot 86. Look, how close the others behind her, 87, 88 (x
3). For men, we tried to set the tee as close as ladies'. Still could not
keep the trophy. Her name will be the first entry in our new annual trophy.

Here is the rule - Whoever first wins 3 Annual Tours will keep the trophy
forever. And we will build another one.

After the first group came back, George Chen kept watching the score cards
constantly. Finally, he got the first prize of Diamond group. Though he was
teased by the playmates of his short shots, he played consistently and
accurately. It's not easy to have Net 66 in Diamond group. Congratulation!

Next one close to George was Frank. Excellent shot, 88.

One special player to mention, Ling-Lee Hsu. Her index is 34.3, but
incredibly she well played the front 9 with 47, 6 strokes advanced her
husband, Alex. Pretty soon, she may become another wife beats hubby.

Congratulation to Lucern. This is her first Net #1 in Gold Group.

Also, we had two excellent guest players, Macial Liang (79) and Tony Su (85).

Thanks for your support for the tournament. And Alex, thanks for the drinks
and snacks.

See you in Poppy Hills.

Results of CTUAA Oct tournament @ Poppy Hills 10/6/02
Mon, 07 Oct 2002 18:51:19 -0700
From:  "Lucern K. Ma" <lma@cisco.com>

Hi All,

Poppy Hills is indeed a very challenging course, especially with the green
aeration going on. What came down as a total surprise was that, for the
very first time, the "Low Gross #1" is in the Gold Tier!!! Shall we excuse
all the Diamond Tier players by blaming it all on the green aeration or on
the Indian Summer weather yesterday? No doubt about it -- a couple of Gold
Tier players had excellent performance despite all these overwhelming odds;
they shot an impressive net in the negative teen's range!! It was an
excellent round for George Cheng and Yu-Huai Hsiao that they surely deserve
applause from everybody.

Besides the regular competition among individuals, we also had lots of fun
playing "best ball" matches between 2 teams (A and B). Both teams had a
mixture of CTUAA and MVGC members. Unlike the Friendship Cup, this time,
we were not playing for the "Cup" and competing against each other but for
establishing the "Friendship" between the members of the two clubs. It was
really great to have all those guest players participating in this
tournament. As a result, out of a total 7 matches, Team B won 5 of them
whereas Team A only won 2. Therefore Team B declared victory of this "best
ball" game. Congratulations to all the Team B members.

In the Diamond Tier, even though he showed up quite late (I assume he
didn't have time to warm up either before teeing off), Steve Hsia showed
his unconquerable power swings and took away "Net #1" in the Diamond
Tier. He shot a 90 as a result. It was also the only person in that tier
who has a negative net. Conrad Chen and Steve Hwang both had a net of
+2. The tie breaker was the score from back nine so Conrad won "Net #2"
and Steve Hwang became the 3rd. Gross for them were 92 and 95, respectively.

In the Gold Tier, besides George Cheng's "Low Gross #1", "Net #1" is
well-deserved for Yu-Huai Hsiao since his gross was 88 (net -13). Lucern
Ma (that is me :P ) won "Net #2" and shot a 93 (net -5). Last but not
least, Hao-Ping Wen walked away with the "Net #3" prize. He shot a gross
of 103 (net -2).

One thing to mention before displaying the detailed results is that Martin
Ku from MVGC shot an 81 and that was the lowest gross among all, including
guest and non-guest players. He also won the "Guest Low Net" and "Nearest
Pin" for hole #2. Congratulations to him.

Following is the final results of the tournament. You can also see the
attached spreadsheet for further details.

Low Gross #1 - George Cheng (gross 84, net -11)

Net #1 - Steve Hsia (gross 90, net -1)
