Hi Members,
Yesterday, 19 dedicated golfers showed up in the morning despite the wet weather condition. We started the tournament
with some light rain before noon and surprisingly, ended it with a beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon! Shoreline Golf Links is
based like a Scotland course and has to be one of the best and hardest courses you can get for the money. There are a few
holes with water on them. #10 is the highlight of the round because it fronts a lake and the second shot to the green is
beautiful but also very dangerous. Three of the par 3s are over water. The course is very demanding and very beautiful.
One thing to mention is that we still decided to award the Longest Drives and all Nearest Pins last minute before the
tournament started. Here's a few highlights of those who made it to the winners' list:
Jerry Tso was the champion of the game. He shot an impressive 83 during the round. I think this is his very first time
winning the Low Gross in the club. Congratulations to him! For the Diamond Tier, Steve Hsia shot an 89 and won the net
#1. Michael Chang, had an excellent 6 consecutive pars in his front 9, shot a 90 as a result and was the net #2. Danny
Tsen also shot a 90 and was net #3. In the Gold Tier, Lucern (myself) and Carol Lin both had a (-4) in their net but
Lucern had a luckier back 9 score so took away the net #1. Carol had a score of 93 and was net #2. Steve Hwang shot
a 90 and won the net #3.
One "low-light" to the game was that there were 3 women playing this tournament (including myself) and nobody made it to
the Longest Drive at hole #5!!! I guess we women golfers really need to work on our driver shots. :P So the prize
ended up being unclaimed.

Dear SYGC Members,
It was so great to see our 16 club members and 3 guests playing in May tournament. Despite a little rain in the beginning of the
morning, it turned out to be a very nice weather later in the afternoon. I guess every player did enjoy the time with friends and play
wonderful game no matter how good or bad of the score.
Norman Lin, with the lowest index in our club, was the champion in this tournament. He shot an impressive 85 during the round and won
the Low Gross. Two net #1's in Diamond and Gold Tiers belong to women players this time, Jennifer Tan shot 86 (-1) and Shirley Chang
shot 105 (+1). Jennifer also got women longest drive and one nearest pin. Similar to Jennifer, Danny Tsen shot 86 (+2) to win Diamond
Tier net #2, and also men longest drive and one nearest pin. Yu Chang shot 87 (+3) to win Diamond Tier net #3 and two nearest pins.
As you can see, the scores are so close and players are very competitive in Diamond Tier. For Gold Tier, net #2 belongs to Randy Tan
97 (+5) and net #3 is Alex Hsu 96 (+6). Istu Wang, in our Guest group, shot 93 to win the Guest Low. Congratulation to all of the
winners!

Thanks again for all of the participants and many helps from seniors. Our next tournament will be held on 6/8 at Spring Valley GC. We
look forward to seeing you all there.
Best Regards,
Hao-Ping Wen
Since the Tournament Host Steve might have been busy, I was just asked to
give the results of the Spring Valley tournament that took place on
6/8. It was a combined tournament between MVGC and SYGC so we were glad to
see some new faces from MVGC. Because there were only 16 participants,
unlike the previous tournaments, we did not divide the players into 2 tiers
as what we had always done. Below is the list of winners. Congratulations
to all of them:
Low Gross #1- Itsu Wang (82, Guest)
Low Gross #2- Yu Chang (84)

Dear SYGC Golfers,
As you can see from the message below, yes, it was a sad day for the history of SYGC -
we failed to retain F-Cup with us this year: with 21 points on the table (14 points of single
match play, and 7 points of best ball match play), SYGC lost to MVGC by 2 points
(9.5-11.5).
However, this is everything Confucius described two thousands years ago, a gentleman's
game. I believe everyone enjoyed the competition as much as they enjoyed the friendly
atmosphere. Here are a couple of quotes we got after the game:
Yu Chang - "Our match was tense (all 4 of us shot very close to net 72) but cordial at all
times. Both sides always congratulated each other's good shots. On Canyon 5, when
Willie's ball landed on the green and rolled toward the hole sideways. Danny and I were
yelling the ball to get closer. Wille asked jokingly did we really mean it. That pretty much
shows how much fun we had in our very competitive round. And I hope everyone's
match was as friendly and competitive as ours."
Norman Lin - "THAT IS FUN and very enjoyable through our match. I can not wait to play
them again. Peter put me in a desperate situation with 2 up and 2 to go for the individual match
but he really show me how a low H.I should play under the pressure. What an experience. Great
job peter."
Lucas Tsai - "I definitely played with two MVGC gentlemen with high sportsmanship standard
in this game. This makes me understand how competitive golf is supposed to be played."
Randy Tan -"All in all, we had a very pleasant atmosphere throughout the whole play, and we
really enjoyed the tournament. I believe my 12-stroke hole set a record for the highest score in
a single hole- I should've asked MVGC for a "Highest Hole" award."
The results are summarized below:
1 Lee Yu vs. Carol Lin => Lee won 4 & 2
Leona vs. Shirley Chang => Leona won 7 & 5
Team MVGC won 7 & 6
2 Henry Ho vs. Alex Hsu => Alex won 5 & 3
Tony Chen vs. Randy Tan => Randy won 2 & 1
Team SYGC won 6 & 5
3 Ken Chang vs. Frank Hsu => Ken and Frank Even
Alan Leu vs. Lucern Ma => Alan won 3 & 1
Team MVGC won 2 & 1
4 Jeff Liu vs. Conrad Chen => Conrad won 3 & 2
Ben Wang vs. Steve Hsia => Ben won 3 & 2
Team SYGC won 2 & 1
5 Martin Ku vs. Lucas Tsai => Lucas won 5 & 3
Mong Ping vs. Michael Chang => Mong won 4 & 3
Team MVGC won 2 & 1
6 Cavin Song vs. Danny Tsen => Danny won 1 up
Willy Wong vs. Yu Chang => Willy & Yu Even
Team SYGC won 1 up
7 Peter Chui vs. Norman Lin => Peter won 3 & 1
Daniel Fung vs. Roger Su => Daniel won 1 up
Team Even
TOTAL SYGC vs. MVGC = 9.5:11.5 MVGC won
Alternative Players:
0 Hunghsin Kuo vs. Albert Pan => Albert won 1 up
Stephen Fong vs. HaoPing Wen => HaoPing won 4 & 3
Team SYGC won 4 & 3
We have to regroup, and come up with a good strategy to win the cup back
next year. The work starts here, now, and on the range and golf courses....

Hi SYGC club members,
My fire place top was feeling empty after the f-cup
trophy was gone. It is nice that I have a new
decoration for that empty spot now. See the enclosed
picture in this email.
Our club won 3rd place in this year's CAAT golf
tourment. SOme of you may remember we won 3rd place in
2000 also with a team of Roger, Norman, Steve and
myself. That year, both Taiwan Univ Alumni team and
Chen-kung Univ alimni team recruited a single digit
handicap gun-hand player. They won 1st and 2nd. Only
our team had all 4 players being club members too.
This year, we won 3rd place with a total gross score
of 342. I shot a very disapponting 82 which could have
been 79 if I just leave my driver in the bag. Istu
Wang played with me, he shot 92 which could have been
88 easily if he did not triple bogey the last 2 holes
with bad drives and extreme unlucky bounces. Lucas had
an 88 and Long Wang's young friend shot 80.
I do not know Lucas's game since I did not see him
after the game or in the after-game dinner. Hopefully,
Long and Lucas can tell us a little more about their
game.
Golden Pro won first place which is no surprise since
they have so many single digit players. Evergreen won
2nd place. If we could have used Ivan's 85, SYGC team
score will be improved by 7 shots and won second
place. Before the score turned in, I asked the
committee staff to include Ivan and Ivy to SYGC team
but they refused. Both of them played as individuals.
BTW, Ivy won 3rd place in Ladies group.
Congratulations to Ivy! Great job! Frank was only 3
yards from defending his senior long drive. Istu hit a
beautiful wedge 3 feet to the hole on 3rd. Too bad
soneone else was 1 feet closer to win the near pin
from him.
Too bad we could not use Ivan's score but conidering
he is member of evergreen too, it might be better this
way. Also, too bad Jennifer did not play, she could
have defended her ladies champion easily this year. I
guess this tournament is no challenge to her anymore
and she expects to beat male player left and right
now.
It was really a lot of fun, mostly because I have
something to show on my fire place now, and also
because Frank could not stop talking to George and myself
about his and Lucern's match. It is really a lot of
fun to play for the team representing the club.

Dear SYGC Members,
It was so great to see our 12 club members playing in July tournament. Despite a little hot during the day, I guess every player
still enjoyed the time with friends and play challenging game at kind of hilly course.
Jennifer Tan was the champion in this tournament. She shot an impressive 83 (net -6) during the round and won the Low Gross.
Two nearest pins and ladies longest drive also belong to her. Since there are only 12 players this time in the tournament, we
only gave three net low prizes. Randy Tan shot 92 (net -2), Shirley Chang shot 109 (net +2) and Gary Wang shot 95 (net +9) to
win net low #1, #2 and #3 respectively. Yu Chang hit longest drive in men's group, and our new member Cangsang Zhao won
one nearest pin. Congratulation to all of the winners!

From: "Lucern K. Ma"
Hi everyone,
To many of us, it was the very first time playing at that course. Yet, some had managed to shoot extremely impressive
scores!! Playing by the Stableford Scoring System was also something new to our members and hopefully it was fun to
everyone. Maybe in the future, we should have more such tournaments in which different scoring systems are tried out and
people can play in different formats. Here's a brief summary of the winners:
Low Gross - Lucas Tsai (gross 83, net -3, points: 10)
-> Congratulations to Lucas!! He's shown continuous significant improvement in his game that I believe his
dedication will certainly lead us all to win back the Friendship Cup next year!!! :)
Winner #1 - Eric Ouyang (gross 85, net -4, points: 12)
-> Eric is another star in the club. Keep up the good work and congratulations!
Winner #2 - Frank Hsu (gross 88, net -3, points: 11)
-> Frank reminds me of an old Chinese saying, "It's the old ginger that is HOT!" (Frank: Hope you don't
mind the word "old"... I'm just trying to say that you're HOT!!! :D ) Congratulations!
Winner #3 - Lucern Ma (gross 92, net 0, points: 10)
-> That is myself. And I don't think I should compliment myself... :P. But I'm happy. Thanks to all the people
in my 4some. Without Randy's guidance to the layout of each hole, I don't think could've played a good round.
Nearest Pins -
Jennifer Tan (#3)
Yu Chang (#7) -> I heard it was only 2 inches to the hole (Wow!!). But later I also heard that he missed a 1-foot
putt at the last hole... (Shihhh!!)
Frank Hsu (#11)
Eric Ouyang (#15)
Longest Drives -
Lucas Tsai (men)
Lucern Ma (women)
Our next one, which is also our annual tournament, is going to be held on Oct. 12, at Santa Clara GC. Lucas will be the
host and you should be receiving the announcement email soon in the next couple of weeks. There's only 2 tournaments left
before the end of 2003, including this upcoming annual event. So don't miss it anymore and come out and play!! I truly
hope to see many long-time-no-see faces there. Also, if you have any suggestions or feedback, any comment is also
welcome by all of us staff members.
Thanks,
-Lucern (Tournament Host)
OK, here's the FINAL pairing list. No further changes will be made.

Group 2 (11:07am) - Lucern Ma(18.7/92), Gary Wang(14.5/88), Randy Tan(21.6/95), Steve Hwang(17.1/90)
Group 3 (11:15am) - Yu Chang(12.3/85), Danny Tsen(10.3/83), Cangsang Zhao(10.6/83), Frank Hsu(17.5/91)

Also, one good news is that there will be LONGEST DRIVES for both men and women, along with 4 NEAREST
PINS. Hope this will add a little more fun to the game. See you all on Sunday!
-Lucern (Tournament Host)
Dear SYGC members,
For those of you who missed this annual event sponsored by
BizLink Technology, you might be very eager to learn the
outcome of this competition. So, let me go straight to the
point:
Yes, Santa Clara is Roger's lucky course, and he did it
again with a gross 77. This is the second time in the club
history that a champion was won with a score lower than 80,
both at Santa Clara Golf Club, and both done by Mr. Roger,
and he now owns 4 of the last 5 annual championships, and
took home the Master's trophy, along with the Nike Driver.
Congratulations, and let's make sure we are not coming back
to Santa Clara to give other people a chance too :-)
It was also observed that all the winning members played in
the later groups, and there was a reason to it: the wind did
die down late afternoon, which was a huge factor in your game
at Santa Clara G&T center. For Gold teir, Randy Tan overcame
an arm injury by going for accupuncture early in the morning,
shot a gross 90 (Net 67) and clinched the division title,
followed by Brian Chang 88 (Net 68) and J.C. Lee 96 (Net 73).
For Diamond Tier, Cangsang Chao shot an impressive 82 (Net 70)
to take the trophy, along with a TaylorMade putter home. He
was followed by Steve Hwang 89 (Net 71), and Norman Lin 82
(Net 72).
Attached please see the overall results.
Another interesting note is that we made three trophies with
Lady Players standing on top of the cup, anticipating at least
the same number of lady players to show off their talent and
grab those trophies back. As you can see, this course is really
not friendly to our most precious members of the club, another
reason why we should not come back here :-)...
After the game, we had a very nice dinner banquet (See attached
pictures), and I also hope every one likes the mockneck shirt we
handed out to keep you warm from winter breezes on the course.
For those of you who would like to have the shirt, please drop
me a line (attached please see the SYGC logo appeared on the
left chest of the shirt).
Photo1/ Photo2/ Photo3/

I will send out another note stating the resolutions coming out
of the dinner banquet/ general assembly and the staff members of
2004.
Next tournament will be Nov. 2, at San Juan Oaks course, and Steve
Hsia will be our tournament host. This is a course we will be playing
Friendship Cup next year with MVGC, so please come and test out the
course. Steve will be sending out another announcement for you to sign
up.
Thanks again for all your support to make this event a successful one.
Regards,
Lucas

(2003 SYGC Executive Secretary and Tournament Host)
Dear SYGC members,
I am glad to announce the new leaders of this club were elected this Sunday
at our general assembly and dinner banquet.
After 2-years term of serving as SYGC club President, Alex Hsu has decided
to relinquish this honorable responsibility. Under his leadership, the club
membership grows to 55; we started F-Cup inter-club competition; and he
successfully lobbied the corporate sponsorship and set an excellent example
of how an annual tournament event can be held. The club staff also enjoyed
many times of warm invitations from Alex to his house and private country
club, which is key to maintain the staff morale.
We are glad that Ivan Ho, also a founding member of this club, has graciously
accepted the baton from Alex as the the SYGC President for the next 2004-2005
term. In the meanwhile, Yu Chang, the most devoted member of this club, and
captain and key strategist of 2002 F-Cup victory, also accepted the challenge
of leading the staff committee as Executive Secretary and make 2004 a
successful and memorable year in the club history. The good news is that all
2003 committee staff will all be staying within Yu's
cabinet.
Yu will be let you know his 2004 club plan. The tentative 2004 tournament
schedule can be found here.
Happy Swinging...
